About Tango

Argentine tango is a social dance which originated from Argentina and Uruguay in the early 20th century. It is distinct from ballroom tango and most people dance it purely socially. A full list of tango events and classes in Melbourne can be found at Melbourne Tango Calendar.

The dance is based on walking around the floor in an improvised manner. The steps are all led and followed, creating a very strong sense of connection to your partner. The challenge comes from having to work with another person's body, and the fun comes from the sense of connection one feels to the partner and the music. The music is also incredibly diverse and rhapsodic, often with strong rhythm and intricate melodies woven together.

Tango has rich layers, affording us many opportunities to laugh and feel emotional all the while learning challenging skills. So people usually get very absorbed by its powers, as it gives as much as you put into it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tango right for me?
Tango is danced by people of all ages and abilities around the world. It doesn't really rely on learning steps, but rather applying a very simple principle of connection to create endless possiblities of movement. If you enjoy the challenge of learning a complex skill based on simple ideas, tango may be the ideal hobby for you.

Do I need to bring a partner?
No, since we usually change partners in the class (unless you come as a couple and specifically ask not to change). This teaches us to connect better with a wide range of people, which is usually more fun. For the course, booking ensures that we can try to construct balanced classes. For drop-in classes, we can usually improvise, though it's helpful to let me know if you are coming as a small group.

What can I expect from the introductory course?
This course is designed to introduce the fundamental principles of tango, which enable two people to connect and improvise. We do a lot of walking around the floor together, and build elements on top of the walk. We will learn some of the most commonly used movements in tango. You should also attend as much of the practice session between 8-9pm as possible. We will also attend some practice sessions in the community whenever possible.

What should I wear?
Just wear comfortable clothes and shoes. It's usually better to wear well-fitting comfortable shoes to start with, even though you may want to get tango shoes later once you're hooked!

What if I can't make all the classes?
If you miss a class, we will help you to get on track by arranging to meet at a practica during the week and going over the material missed.

Are the classes LGBTQIA+ friendly?
Yes , this is a friendly, inclusive space. Anyone can lead or follow.
